Born in Italy in 1898, Salvatore Ferragamo made himself his first pair of shoes at age nine. Ferragamo’s shoemaking aspirations took him from studying shoemaking in Naples to a cowboy boot factory in Boston to repairing and making shoes in Santa Barbara then Hollywood. Ferragamo studied anatomy at the University of Southern California to better understand why beautiful shoes could be so painful to wear. He took his experiences and knowledge and returned to Italy in 1927 to open a workshop in Florence, the city where his foundation and museum remain today. Ferragamo held over 350 patents including the invention of the cork wedge, widely considered one of the most iconic and influential shoe designs of the 20th century.
